Visiting M&S Schmalberg was a really cool and educational experience for me today. Warren Brand, the owner, gave us a great tour of the shop and the work room. M&S Schmalberg has been in business for 100 years in New York City and still continues to be popular with fashion designers and interior designers. Their fabric flowers have been used by designers like Zac Posen, Zimmerman, and Marchesa. Their work has also been featured on Sex and the City and Anne Hathaway on the red carpet. M&S Schmalberg also does a lot of work for non-celebrities. They are able to create single flowers and bouquets for your home.
I had a really great experience at M&S Schmalberg and saw a possibility for a new career opportunity some day. I didn’t know fashion merchandising could take me in this kind of direction and I like knowing I have more options. Warren Brand did a great job at explaining his business and showing us how the flowers are made and the many different fabrics they can be made out of. He told us a story about a bride bringing in her mother’s old wedding gown and turning it into a bouquet for her wedding day. He also told us how a customer brought in alligator skin pocket books to be turned into flowers and the sample he showed us of that was amazing. He puts a new twist of florals and I thought it was really cool how he can turn old items we may not want or use anymore into something beautiful.
